WEST is now West on the Corner of Woodlands Road

By on May 7, 2015

Independent brewery, bar and restaurant WEST is establishing a second outlet in its namesake location – the West End of Glasgow.

Opening its doors from tomorrow, Friday,  May 8, WEST on the Corner on Woodlands Road, is the second outlet for the company whose brewery, bar and restaurant in the city’s East End has enjoyed great success and gained a number of prestigious industry awards since opening nine years ago.

Housed in the former home of The Halt, one of the city’s longest-established pubs, WEST on the Corner has undergone a significant transformation in the last four months to a light and airy 120-seater bar and restaurant with open kitchen and at least 10 draft WEST beers to choose from.

The sleek and comfortable interior showcases some original features of the building which have been uncovered and restored, including sandstone and brick walls as well as stained, leaded glass panels.

Spurred on by the positive reaction from customers to last summer’s pop-up bar on the premises, WEST owner Petra Wetzel decided to give the bar a permanent makeover.

She said: “I believe we have given 160 Woodlands Road a second lease of life. The new lay-out and offering is very much what myself, my family and my friends seek out when socialising. I wanted to create a place that we would all love as much as the original WEST on Glasgow Green.

“Woodlands Road was my home as a student at Glasgow University and I am thrilled that people in the local area, and from further afield, now have an alternative WEST in the West End.”

Produced at the Templeton Building in the East End of the city, WEST’s formidable lagers and wheat beers will be a star attraction in the West End, especially when coupled with the venue’s eclectic menu featuring both Scottish and German cuisines.

Opening from 9am till midnight every day, WEST on the Corner will also offer a simple yet sophisticated breakfast menu to start the day on a high note with a delicious selection of cooked meals throughout the day till 11pm.

And WEST say it’s not just great beer and food that links Glasgow Green and WEST on the corner. One of Bud Neill’s most famous cartoon characters, Lobey Dosser stands, immortalised in bronze alongside his trusty, two-legged steed El Fideldo, keeping watch over WEST on the Corner from across the road.

But keen fans of the comic will also know that Lobey’s full job title is Sheriff of Calton Creek – the very district where the original WEST Brewery, bar and restaurant currently resides.

Wetzel added: “It could be argued that we’re following Sheriff Dosser’s trail blazing path, or it could just be a coincidence – we’ll let you decide!”.

The opening of WEST on the Corner is the first of two exciting large-scale projects to come to fruition as the company has also begun work of on a new, state-of-the art brewery. Due to open in autumn 2015, it will increase its brewing capacity 10-fold upon its completion and enable it to keep up with the growing demand for its award-winning lagers and wheat beers.
