The house Charles Rennie Mackintosh ALMOST built

By on January 9, 2014

A house designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh – but not built until 21 years ago – is up for sale in Highland idyll Strathnairn. The Artist’s Cottage sits in grounds of about 1.2 acres in the beautiful glen  on the outskirts of the village of Farr, just south of Inverness and bordered by the Monadhliath Mountains.

In 1900 the Glasgow architect prepared drawings for this ‘dream house’ and the plans and elevational drawings have been held in the Hunterian Art Gallery. It’s from this original material the working drawings for the project were eventually produced and in 1992 the  house was finally constructed.

The two-floor Artist’s Cottage has four bedrooms (three en suite), a modern kitchen, dining hall, sitting room, study area and utility room, with a balcony and roof-top terrace. There is also a barbecue bothy with a small fireplace and veranda!

The Artist’s Cottage is on sale at offers over £595,000 from
