Hassan hails five-star Hillhead

By on June 20, 2016

This first win in the WDCU First Division was a fine triumph for captain Hassan Azhar and his team over a very experienced Renfrew side.

Azhar said: “It’s great to get our first win and everyone  is overjoyed.  But we shall have to improve in all areas to give Greenock a game at Glenpark next Saturday.”

The five wicket winning margin might suggest a slightly one sided game but that would obscure the reality for the side batting second as Hillhead were very  patient in their pursuit of the target, taking the first 25 overs to reach 62 runs.

But this solid platform was invaluable for the final run chase. The visitors’ early endeavours were pegged back thanks to skilful fielding from the coltish Jack Holland who judged a catch well at square leg and then ran out the dangerous Ahmed with a direct hit again from square leg.

Despite a solid rebuilding operation from Said and Muzaffer, Renfrew struggled to free themselves from the stranglehold of Hillhead’s spinners with Adrees, Ahmed and Patel sharing seven wickets, the veteran Imran having the best return of the day with four for 20.

The successful reply from Hillhead was built on a watchful middle order from Azhar and Patel  with the latter assuming the role of senior partner unleashing a fine range of strokes all round the wicket to record his first half century for the club.

Imran Adrees mixed the “long handle” with some circumspect defence to record 33 not out and he and Atif Ahmed saw Hillhead home with 13 balls to play.
