Happy Birthday Robert Burns – join the party …

By on January 16, 2014

You’ll have no problem finding local events or dinners so you can join in with Rabbie Burns’ birthday party  later this month. Check out just a few that are highlighted below … But before toasting Scotland’s bard, why not read our previous stories on haggis – including an intriguing tale about Fanny Craddock – and why neeps are always turnip

Bairns for Burns has been organised by The Children’s Wood – in Kelbourne Street Scout Hall if it’s rainy – with a performance by Tam Dean Burn (Sun, Jan 26, 2pm, £2 donation). Youngsters might also like to enter the ‘Ode to the Children’s Wood’ writing competition, details below. There will also be a Burns Supper and Family Ceilidh in the scout hal on the same evening (3-7pm, £12 per family).

Iain Robertson is hosting the Burns supper at Oran Mor (Fri, Jan 24) with Liz Lochead delivering her own Toast From The Lassies at this three-course meal, with a dram and entertainment (£38). And at Cottiers there is a Burns Ceilidh over two nights (Fri & Sat, Jan 24 & 25, 7-11.30pm),  with a three-course meal, dram and a ceilidh beginning at 9pm.

Keep the Fire Burning is described as an ‘alternative’ Burns night at SWG3 hosted by offKILTR (Sat, Jan 25) with host Alan Bissett and music from Twitch, The Bum Clocks and Hector Bizerk from 9-1am (£10).

Plenty of restaurants are also staging special nights. Among them are the Italian Bistro holding a Burns Supper (Sat, Jan 25, 7pm) at the upstairs Partners Suite, with a live piper and  three-course meal (£24.95) and the Ubiquitous Chip, where ‘a nicht of cheerful chantin’ and reelin’ is promised (Sun, Jan 26, from 6.30pm) a four-course meal, dram, piper live music – and a ceilidh (£49.95).

And Robert Burns in Music, Words & Song will be celebrated @ the Mackintosh Church, Queen’s Cross (Fri, Jan 31, 7-9.30pm). With baritone Paul Keohone, Wilma MacDougall and accompanist Geoffrey Tanti. (£10.00 – all proceeds to the Mackintosh Church Music Appeal for a permanent piano and lighting improvements).
